Review: ‘My Pornstar Friend’ – A Fresh, Comedic Take on Passion and Identity in German Cinema

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, film critic Charlotte Thompson writes in an exclusive review that the new documentary My Pornstar Friend, directed by and starring Rosa Friedrich—which made its world premiere at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival—is a bold and distinctive work exploring gender norms and diverse identities. Friedrich succeeds in delivering an entertaining yet deeply psychological film.
The initial concept took shape when Rosa Friedrich decided to document her friend, Timo, on his journey to fulfill his exhibitionist desires. The original plan was for Rosa to film Timo’s romantic encounters with various partners; however, artistic differences between the two—culminating in Timo’s sudden disappearance mid-project—completely altered the course of production. Like any determined filmmaker, Rosa chose to finish the project on her own terms. To recreate previously recorded footage, she utilized face-swapping technology and artificial intelligence to obscure Timo’s facial identity while keeping the narrative intact.
Following Timo’s departure, Friedrich shifted her lens toward a diverse group of women and non-binary individuals, including an adrenaline-event specialist, content creators, and industry activists. She invited each participant to direct short films depicting their personal fantasies and passions. This pivot transformed the documentary into a sweet, comedic, and profoundly psychological exploration that centers far more on the human mind and soul than on mere physical intimacy.
Traveling across German-speaking countries such as Germany and Austria and jumping through time, the film captures the complexity of human relationships and the duality between wearing a mask and being one’s authentic self. Throughout the documentary, Timo and Rosa interview notable figures such as former opera singer turned producer Adrienne Simonian, and even travel to Hungary to meet prominent adult performer Donna.
The blending of short episodes directed by the participants with Melanie Schmidt’s humorous editing gives the film a dynamic and engaging rhythm. Ultimately, showcasing these works at a film festival—and editing together the real-time reactions of the performers as they watch themselves on screen—evokes a unique sense of joy, acceptance, and liberation for the audience. Driven by clever editing and a genuinely honest tone, My Pornstar Friend is positioned for continued success on the international festival circuit following its strong showing at Karlovy Vary.
