First Reactions to ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’: Tom Holland Shines in a Grounded Sequel Free from Multiverse Fatigue

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, following early press screenings of Tom Holland’s fourth standalone Spider-Man film, first reactions to Spider-Man: Brand New Day have hit the web, with critics calling it a thrilling, deep, emotional, and character-driven chapter.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the film is set four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Following Doctor Strange’s spell, Peter Parker lives alone in New York City, fighting crime without anyone he loves remembering who he is.
Erik Davis, film critic for Fandango, praised the movie, writing: “The film feels deeper, richer, and far more mature than the previous trilogy. This maturity extends beyond the narrative into the action set-pieces, with Cretton delivering some of Tom Holland’s finest fight sequences to date. The movie is a captivating blend of a detective story, a psychological thriller, and a two-hander comedy (Spider-Man and The Punisher’s banter is phenomenal) that ultimately serves as a true love letter to fans.”
Film journalist Brandon Davis also shared his thoughts: “This might be the most ‘Marvel’ film I’ve ever seen! Cretton has crafted a heartwarming and exhilarating experience that pays homage to previous entries—especially Sam Raimi’s trilogy. The appearances of the Hulk and The Punisher are perfectly balanced, and the big reveal delivers on every level.”
Highlighting the film’s departure from recent MCU trends, critic Peter Howell noted: “Brand New Day strips away the multiverse fatigue to bring us right back to the grounded, street-level roots of the hero we fell in love with. Tom Holland finally embodies Peter Parker’s edge, sarcastic wit, and emotional baggage exactly as Stan Lee originally intended.”
Alongside Tom Holland, the film stars Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal (as The Punisher), Mark Ruffalo (as The Hulk), and Sadie Sink.
Holland took on a more active role in the development and story of this installment, monitoring online feedback and bringing fan ideas directly into production meetings. Reflecting on the process, Holland shared: “Being involved in designing the new suit and shaping our overall vision was an incredible experience. I spent time online seeing exactly what fans wanted out of a Spider-Man movie, and I brought those points straight to our meetings—because at the end of the day, we make these movies for the fans.”
