Production Design of “Cape Fear” Series: Creating Suspense and Ominous Tension Amidst Spanish Moss

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, one of the greatest attractions of Apple TV+’s new series adaptation of “Cape Fear” (itself a reimagining of Martin Scorsese’s classic film) is its rich atmosphere and breathtaking tension. The creation of this feverish nightmare in the heat of the American South is credited to the artistic production design of Jaime Walker McCall, who successfully transformed the geography of Savannah, Georgia, into a vehicle for suspense.

What makes the show’s rich, authentic texture so remarkable is that the production crew filmed for only a single day in Savannah itself; for the remainder of the shoot, Atlanta doubled for the Southern city. Speaking about the challenge of transforming Atlanta into Savannah, McCall noted: “Savannah is a lush city defined by its ancient oak trees and draped Spanish moss, whereas Atlanta is sprawling and hilly. We had to curate locations that felt intimate, domestic, and subtly haunted to truly evoke the essence of Savannah.”

For the Bowden family home, the production designer selected a suitable exterior in Atlanta and built the interior sets to align with the script, simultaneously conveying both a sense of history and underlying insecurity. To heighten the realism, she incorporated personal items from the cast; for instance, the athletic medals displayed in the room of Tom (played by Patrick Wilson) are Wilson’s actual marathon medals.

In recent episodes, viewers are introduced to the family of the story’s antagonist, Max Cady (played by Javier Bardem). To create a stark contrast between locations, McCall designed the Cady family home as chaotic, overgrown, and wild, mirroring the unbridled madness brewing within the family. Additionally, her design for Natalie’s bedroom (played by Lily Collias) draws inspiration from Juliette Lewis’s room in Scorsese’s 1991 film adaptation, serving as a homage to that classic work.

Showrun by Nick Antosca, the “Cape Fear” series is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
