Live broadcast of legal confrontation between Rebel Wilson and Charlotte MacInnes on YouTube

According to the CinemaDrame news agency, a legal battle between Rebel Wilson and Charlotte MacInnes, the lead actress of the film “The Deb”, is set to begin in Australia soon, and the proceedings will be streamed live on YouTube.

The legal dispute between Rebel Wilson and Charlotte MacInnes, the lead actor in Wilson’s directorial debut “The Deb,” will commence in Australia next week and will be available to the public online via YouTube.

MacInnes has filed a lawsuit against Wilson in the Federal Court of Australia’s New South Wales division. She claims that the Pitch Perfect star damaged her reputation by alleging that she was sexually harassed by the film’s producer, Amanda Ghost, and then cooperated with MacInnes to conceal the incident.

The hearing is scheduled for Monday, April 20 at 10:15 a.m. local time. According to the Federal Court of Australia, the session will be broadcast on its YouTube channel “to ensure judicial transparency.” It is still unclear whether Wilson or MacInnes will appear in court in person.

The dispute became public in the summer of 2024, when The Deb was first selected for the Toronto Film Festival. Wilson, concerned about the impact on the film’s premiere, posted a video on Instagram accusing the film’s producers of “inappropriate behavior toward the lead actress.”

Wilson’s position is that Ghost abused her position of power and caused distress to MacInnes by showering with her in an apartment in Sydney in September 2023. Ghost and MacInnes do not deny that they were in the shower together, but both insist the incident was non-sexual and occurred after Ghost experienced a medical issue. MacInnes also states that the incident did not upset her.

The case has now evolved into a broad legal dispute across multiple jurisdictions, including Los Angeles and Australia, casting a shadow over The Deb—a positive coming-of-age film about teenagers from remote areas attending a formal ball. The film was finally released in Australia earlier this month but still has no U.S. distributor.

In California, Wilson is attempting to overturn a lower court ruling that denied her motion to dismiss the defamation case under anti-SLAPP provisions. The lawsuit was brought by the film’s British producers, including Amanda Ghost, her husband Gregor Cameron, and Vince Holden. They claim Wilson is a liar and a bully who defamed them after being denied writing credit on The Deb.

During this week’s appeal hearing, Wilson’s lawyer, Allison Thompson, tried to downplay the significance of Wilson’s Instagram video. According to reports, Thompson said the video was posted in an “emotional moment” and that the claims made were exaggerated, vague, and not provable as fact.

Thompson also stated: “When was the last time you showered or bathed with your boss? My client considers this behavior inappropriate.”
