Paramount Delivers on Its Promise at CinemaCon; Johnny Depp, Billie Eilish Appear and “Top Gun 3” Revealed

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Paramount made a strong debut at CinemaCon following its merger with Skydance and amid reports of a potential acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The studio arrived with bold promises for the future of theatrical releases and brought major stars such as Johnny Depp, Billie Eilish, and James Cameron to the event.

This daily CinemaCon report reviews the most important announcements, presentations, notable absences, and the overall atmosphere of the ceremony.

Among the showcased titles, “Children of Blood and Bone” by Gina Prince-Bythewood drew the most attention. Based on Tomi Adeyemi’s novel, the fantasy film tells a story of magic, good, and evil in an African kingdom. The cast includes Thuso Mbedu, Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Tosin Cole, Cynthia Erivo, Lashana Lynch, Zachary Momoh, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Idris Elba, and Viola Davis. The film is scheduled for release on January 15, 2027.

During the presentation, Paramount featured African drummers and dancers, while several cast and crew members spoke about their involvement. Regina King emphasized that “Black girls need to see themselves in roles filled with wonder and power.” Prince-Bythewood described the film as “magical, action-packed, and highly entertaining.” Scenes shown included warriors riding tigers, romantic moments, and multiple battles, with the main character summoning a massive creature made of branches and vines to fight enemies.

Paramount’s film executives Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein confirmed that “Top Gun 3” is in development with Tom Cruise returning, and the screenplay is currently being written.

One of the biggest surprises of the event was Johnny Depp’s return to major studio projects. He will star in “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol,” an adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic novel. This marks his first major film since leaving the Fantastic Beasts franchise. Depp appeared on stage and spoke calmly about the project, noting that although Alastair Sim’s portrayal is iconic, it does not prevent a new version from being made. The film also features Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Charlie Murphy, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen, and is set for release on November 13, 2026.

It was also announced that Taylor Sheridan remains a key figure at Paramount despite rumors of a move to Universal. Meanwhile, a major Call of Duty film adaptation is in development, directed and co-written by Peter Berg, with a planned release date of June 30, 2028.

Another project introduced was “Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story,” based on the true story of John Tuggle, the last pick in the 1983 NFL Draft, who later earned a role with the New York Giants and became a standout special teams player. Michael Shannon plays Bill Parcells. The film is described as an inspirational sports drama and is scheduled for a Christmas release.

Among the projects expected but not present at the event was a new film from Damien Chazelle, reportedly starring Cillian Murphy, Daniel Craig, and Michelle Williams, set in a prison environment exploring power dynamics and violence. However, it still has no official title or release date.

Instead, “Heart of the Beast,” produced by Chazelle and directed by David Ayer, was introduced. The story follows a former special forces soldier who, after a plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness, struggles to survive alongside his retired service dog. Brad Pitt stars alongside a German Shepherd, with scenes featuring battles against wolves, bears, and raging rivers.

In the closing segment, Paramount highlighted its post-merger vision. A flashy video narrated by Tom Cruise showcased the studio’s legacy, featuring appearances by Timothée Chalamet, James Cameron, Will Smith, and even Sonic, directed by Jon M. Chu.

Paramount-Skydance chairman David Ellison received a warm welcome and stated that, if the Paramount–Warner merger goes through, the studio plans to produce at least 30 films per year. He also pledged to maintain a 45-day theatrical exclusivity window, followed by streaming release after approximately 90 days—an issue currently sparking major debate in the industry.

Additional announcements included a new Jackass film titled “Jackass Best and Last,” a trailer for Street Fighter, and confirmation of another installment in the Longlegs franchise.

Paramount also referenced upcoming projects such as Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, a new World War Z, a new Star Trek, A Quiet Place Part III, and several other titles.

Finally, James Cameron announced that the “Billie Eilish: Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour” project will use new 3D technology not even used in the Avatar films, with parts of the backgrounds enhanced using artificial intelligence.
