“Oh Horizon,” directed by Madeleine Rotzler, set for summer theatrical release

Maria Bakalova and David Strathairn — as told by Variance Films

According to the CinemaDrame news agency, exclusive: the comedy film “Oh Horizon,” starring Maria Bakalova (The Apprentice) and David Strathairn (Nomadland), is set to receive a theatrical release in June through Variance Films. The film is written and directed by Madeleine Rotzler.

Following its premiere in New York on June 12, the film will roll out gradually across Los Angeles and other markets starting June 19 through July.

“Oh Horizon” follows Abby (played by Bakalova), a young neuroscientist who, while coping with the recent loss of her father (played by Strathairn), enters an exciting new romantic relationship and simultaneously makes a significant breakthrough in her professional career. However, when an emerging technology allows her to speak with her father again, her life is turned upside down. Rotzler’s magical-realist narrative explores human relationships against the backdrop of rapidly evolving technologies.

The film had its world premiere at the 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where it received the “Panavision Spirit Award” for independent cinema.

Rotzler said: “I started writing in 2020 about a world I imagined as a kind of alternate reality. Just a few years later, that world no longer feels so alternate. That’s part of why I’m excited for audiences to step away from their screens and experience this film together with others in a dark, cool space.”

Alongside Bakalova and Strathairn, the cast includes Adam Pally (Sonic the Hedgehog), Maggie Grace (Taken), Avi Nash (The Walking Dead), and Paulina Porizkova (Wedding Band Blues). The film is produced by Madeleine Rotzler, Paul Nelson, Audrey Tomassini, and Joseph Cross, with Mark Gill serving as executive producer.
