Sean Baker’s “Love Letter” to Italian Sex Comedies After Anora

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Sean Baker says that after winning four Oscars for Anora, he has no intention of collaborating with major Hollywood studios. Instead, he hopes to make another independent and explicit film, once again casting non-professional actors, to tell another story about sex workers.
Baker, who spent the past year scouting filming locations, revealed the first details of his new project this week at the Berlin International Film Festival. He says the story will be set in Italy and will serve as a tribute to classic Italian sex comedies.
“It’s my love letter to the Italian sex comedies of the 1960s and 1970s — I’ve leaned in that direction,” Baker said. “We’ll be shooting this year.”
Italian actress Vera Gemma, known for Vera and Scarlet Diva, is reportedly among the cast, according to unofficial reports.
Baker added that he plans to make the film independently to prevent Hollywood studio executives from interfering with the final cut. However, he hopes that Neon will once again handle distribution following Anora.
The filmmaker previously said that his new project would “lean a bit more toward comedy” and that “the humor might be a little more overt.”
If production begins in 2026, the film could potentially premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2027. During awards season, Anora received numerous honors, including prizes from the Producers Guild, Directors Guild, and Writers Guild for Original Screenplay.
