Rare Audience Score for Sony’s Animated Film Goat

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Sony Pictures Animation’s new film Goat has recently opened in theaters worldwide and, with a $47 million debut, has delivered the biggest animated opening since Disney’s Coco in 2017. Audience reception was so strong that it resulted in a rare record.

This record is not related to Rotten Tomatoes, although the film performed well there too, earning a 93% audience score and 80% from critics. The milestone was recorded by CinemaScore, one of the key indicators of moviegoer reactions. Goat has now become the highest-rated original film in the history of Sony Pictures Animation and the only title from the studio to receive a straight A grade.

The story follows a goat named Will, voiced by Caleb McLaughlin, known for Stranger Things, who dreams of becoming a star in “Roarball.” The voice cast also includes Stephen Curry, Gabrielle Union, Nick Kroll, David Harbour, Aaron Pierre, Jelly Roll, Bobby Lee, Jennifer Hudson, Patton Oswalt, and Ayesha Curry, the real-life wife of Stephen Curry.

The studio has previously produced original titles such as Open Season, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Surf’s Up, and Hotel Transylvania. However, in the history of Sony Pictures Animation, only six films — including Goosebumps, Smurfs: The Lost Village, The Star, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse — have received an A or A+ from CinemaScore. Into the Spider-Verse remains the only film on that list to earn an A+.

With such a performance, Sony will undoubtedly be tempted to move forward with a sequel.
