Journalists Urge WHCA to Firmly Defend Free Speech Ahead of Trump’s Attendance

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, a group of veteran and former journalists sent an open letter to the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), calling on the organization to take a firm and public stance against the Donald Trump administration’s attacks and pressures on the media and press freedom. The letter comes ahead of the rescheduled annual correspondents’ dinner, an event set to take place on Friday with Trump himself in attendance.
The association’s original dinner in April was cut short following a shooting near the venue’s entrance that injured a Secret Service agent. Pointing to the escalation of government pressure since that incident, the letter’s signatories highlighted key examples of First Amendment violations, including the Department of Justice summoning New York Times journalists, seizing their phone records, and threats to revoke ABC’s broadcast licenses following a joke by Jimmy Kimmel.
In an official statement responding to the pressures, the White House Correspondents’ Association noted that bringing journalists and the president together under one roof serves as a reminder of the vital importance of a free press to the public. The dinner, which will be held with a reduced capacity at the Waldorf Astoria, will feature remarks by Trump, the presentation of professional journalism awards, a special recognition of the injured Secret Service agent, and entertainment programming.

“Press freedom and First Amendment rights are the foundation of any healthy democracy. It’s crucial for the WHCA to stand firm on these principles, especially during times of high tension between the administration and journalists.”
“The role of independent journalism in holding power accountable can’t be overstated. Hopefully, the correspondents’ dinner serves as a strong reminder of why a free and protected press is vital for the public.”
