Indian Box Office Smashes Records in First Half of 2026, Fueled by Mega-Hit ‘Dhuranandhar: The Revenge’

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, a new report by statistical firm Ormax Media reveals that India’s domestic box office concluded the first six months of 2026 with a staggering total gross of ₹6,398 crore ($664.7 million). This marks the strongest first half of a year for the industry in the post-pandemic era. The figure, which strictly excludes worldwide collections, represents an increase of nearly ₹650 crore ($67.5 million) compared to the same period last year.
The feature film Dhuranandhar: The Revenge emerged as the undisputed star of this period, single-handedly capturing nearly 20% of the entire Indian box office revenue in the first half of the year—a trend that underscores a widening gap between massive blockbusters and the rest of the market. During this timeframe, 6 films managed to cross the ₹200 crore milestone. However, the number of films reaching the ₹100 crore mark dropped from 17 last year to 13 this year. Additionally, the top 15 films collectively accounted for 58% of total box office earnings.
Footfall also rebounded after three years of stagnation and decline, growing by 5% to reach 378 million admissions, up from 362 million in the first half of last year. This recovery was largely driven by the stellar performance of Hindi (Bollywood) and Marathi-language cinema. The market share for Hindi cinema rose by 5% to claim a 44% stake, whereas Tamil cinema suffered the steepest decline, dropping to a 12% share. Meanwhile, Marathi cinema enjoyed its finest hour, capturing a 4% market share. The month of June also proved highly successful, bolstered by the performance of the Telugu-language film Peddi.
Based on historical box office trends in India, total revenue for the full year of 2026 is projected to cross the ₹15,000 crore ($1.56 billion) threshold, which would set an unprecedented record in the country’s cinematic history. This immense optimism is fueled by a massive slate of highly anticipated releases in the second half of the year, including Ramayana: Part One, The King, Toxic, Fauji, Jailer 2, Avengers: Doomsday, Spider-Man: A Brand New Day, and Odyssey. This lineup is expected to push total ticket sales past the 1 billion mark for the first time in years.
