Lucrecia Martel’s Documentary Nuestra Tierra Wins Best Film at the London Film Festival

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Nuestra Tierra (“Our Land”) directed by Lucrecia Martel has won the Best Film Award in the Official Competition at the London Film Festival.

The jury, chaired by Elizabeth Karlsen, included filmmaker Kahlil Joseph and New Yorker critic Justin Chang, who issued a statement explaining their decision:

“With profound empathy and journalistic and cinematic precision, Lucrecia Martel delivers a penetrating look at the 2009 murder of Javier Chocobar, leader of the Indigenous Chuschagasta community in the province of Tucumán, Argentina. By emphasizing contemporary voices and forgotten histories, she crafts a portrait of a people who, through her lens, finally taste the justice long denied to them by the legal system. In a year of exceptionally strong competition, we are honored to recognize this singular achievement.”

Nuestra Tierra marks Martel’s first documentary feature and her first full-length film since Zama (2017), which received widespread critical acclaim.

Other winners at this year’s festival include Wincho Nchogu’s One Woman One Bra, which received the Sutherland Award for Best First Feature; David Benghong’s Les Voyageurs, which won the Grierson Award for Best Documentary; and Saeed Zagha’s Coyotes, a British-Palestinian production that took home the Best Short Film Award.

The London Film Festival concludes tonight with the screening of 100 Nights of Hero.
