Wes Anderson and Bill Murray Make Surprise Appearance in Paris; Unveil Plans for Upcoming Western Feature

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, a surprise onstage appearance by Wes Anderson and Bill Murray at the “Cinéma Paradiso” film event in Paris has sparked immense excitement among cinephiles. During the appearance, Anderson and Murray unveiled plans for an upcoming Western feature—a project Anderson revealed they have been discussing “for years,” with the Wilson brothers (Owen and Luke Wilson) also expected to join the cast.
The captivating encounter took place during the four-day “Cinéma Paradiso” festival. The event, which features open-air screenings and live music performances, is organized by French cinematic powerhouse MK2 in the courtyard of Paris’s iconic Louvre Museum.
Bill Murray Jokes About Wes Anderson’s On-Set Work Ethic
While Wes Anderson was introducing his acclaimed 2014 masterpiece The Grand Budapest Hotel, Bill Murray unexpectedly took the stage, employing his signature deadpan humor to describe the director’s behavior behind the scenes.
Addressing the crowd, Murray joked:
“The question is, what is it like to work with Wes Anderson behind the scenes? As you can see, he has a beautiful smile. Come on, Wes, give them a smile! He has a beautiful smile, but he deprives us of it. He doesn’t smile at us all day! You do a take, you look at the director, the scene ends, and the camera moves, but you get no reaction from him. But later, once Wes has had his dessert, that beautiful smile reappears! So he really needs to eat dessert all day; until he has chocolate or a panna cotta, he doesn’t calm down!”
Bill Murray remains a foundational fixture within Wes Anderson’s cinematic universe, having appeared in 10 of his films over the past three decades, including Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Moonrise Kingdom, The French Dispatch, and his latest upcoming project.
From a Western Concept to Honoring Texan Roots
Continuing his commentary, Murray added: “The movie I want to see made is a cowboy movie (a Western), because Wes is from Texas, and I think he owes the world a Western. That’s why I’ve been walking like this for a while!” before proceeding to mimic a cowboy’s stride.
Wes Anderson corroborated the idea, stating:
“We are going to make a Western. We’ve been talking about it for years. I think Owen and Luke Wilson will also be part of this project. They are from Texas too, and I think it’s our destiny.”
About the “Cinéma Paradiso” Event at the Louvre
Elisha Karmitz, co-CEO of MK2, commented on the vision behind the initiative: “Our goal is to create a sense of wonder for the general public through cinema, music, and culinary culture. This event functions more like a music festival that also screens films.”

Expansion of MK2’s Operations in Paris
The family-run MK2 empire, managed by brothers Nathanaël and Elisha Karmitz, plays a pivotal role in fostering alternative cultural activities in the French capital. The company recently handled the theatrical distribution of the hit documentary Kaizen—which chronicles prominent YouTube influencer Inoxtag’s ascent of Mount Everest.
Fresh off winning four accolades at the recent Cannes Film Festival, the company has also launched a crowdfunding campaign, opening up equity shares to the public for the first time in its 52-year history to secure capital for modernizing and expanding its major cinema complex in Paris.
