Live Nation’s Controversial Disclosure: CEO’s Secret Dialogue with Trump Preceded Unexpected Antitrust Settlement
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Entertainment giant Live Nation has officially confirmed it held multiple high-level meetings with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and the White House Counsel’s Office just prior to reaching a sudden, unexpected settlement in its massive federal antitrust case. It has also been revealed that Live Nation’s President and CEO, Michael Rapino, engaged in a direct conversation with President Donald Trump.
According to newly filed court documents reviewed by Variety, Live Nation’s legal team disclosed that between February 2025 and June 2026, the company engaged in numerous “in-person meetings, video conferences, telephone calls, and written communications” with the DOJ and members of the White House Counsel’s Office. The filings indicate that all of these communications were aimed at negotiating a potential settlement between the United States government and Live Nation.
Among the prominent figures participating in these consultations were Michael Rapino (CEO), Joe Berchtold (President and CFO of Live Nation), Dan Wall (Executive VP of Corporate and Regulatory Affairs), and Richard Grenell. Grenell serves as a Live Nation board member whom Trump appointed as interim head of the historic Kennedy Center in February 2025, following a sweeping purge of the arts center’s prior leadership and Trump appointing himself as chairman of its board.
Furthermore, in the most controversial segment of the document, it is disclosed that Rapino held a direct conversation with Trump in February 2026. While the filing claims that the status of the antitrust lawsuit was referenced during the call, it asserts that “no substantive discussions regarding the terms or details of a potential settlement took place.”
The U.S. government originally launched the landmark antitrust lawsuit against Live Nation in May 2024 under the Biden administration, joined by nearly 40 states. At the time, the government alleged that Live Nation maintained an illegal and monopolistic stranglehold over the live concert market, seeking a court order to force the company to divest from its massive ticketing subsidiary, Ticketmaster.
However, in a stunning turn of events this past March, the federal government unexpectedly settled with Live Nation and dismissed the case. Although legal battles persisted at the state level—resulting in an April jury verdict finding that Live Nation and Ticketmaster did indeed illegally wield monopoly power over the ticketing market—the revelation of these behind-the-scenes meetings with the Trump White House has fueled immense scrutiny and controversy surrounding the sudden federal settlement.
