Robert Eggers’ Werewulf Film to Be Shot in a 1.37:1 Aspect Ratio

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Werewulf, directed by Robert Eggers, is being filmed in an unconventional aspect ratio. Nearly a month after production began, rumors have surfaced that Eggers is shooting his latest film in a 1.37:1 aspect ratio on 35mm film. Jarin Blaschke, who collaborated with Eggers on The Lighthouse and Nosferatu, serves as the cinematographer on Werewulf.

This aspect ratio—also known as the Academy ratio—features a more natural color and light rendering and produces a square-shaped frame. Eggers shot The Lighthouse in a 1.19:1 aspect ratio which, although slightly narrower than 1.37:1, is visually similar.

Few details about the story have been revealed, except that Eggers will portray the mythical creature in 13th-century England. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, and Lily-Rose Depp will star in the film.

Sources at The Hollywood Reporter say the screenplay’s dialogue stays true to the historical period and will be translated for viewers unfamiliar with Old English.

Werewulf is set to be released on December 25, 2026.
