Renaming of the U.S. Screen Actors Guild Awards Ceremony

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, the Screen Actors Guild awards ceremony will undergo a name change starting next year. The guild announced last Friday that the event will henceforth be called The Actor Awards.

In a statement, the guild said: “Our iconic statuette has always been called ‘The Actor,’ and aligning the ceremony with the award itself makes sense.” The ceremony’s website writes that this “evolution” has “long been” on its way, and with the expansion of its audience on Netflix, the timing of officially entering a “new era” feels appropriate.

The Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) consists of around 160,000 actors, broadcast journalists, dancers, announcers, DJs, news writers, news editors, hosts, puppeteers, singers, stunt performers, voice actors, and other artists.

The guild was founded in 1933, and four years later the American Federation of Radio Artists (AFRA) was established. In 1952, AFRA’s television and radio divisions merged, and in 2012, both organizations combined into one.

The upcoming Actor Awards ceremony will be held on March 1, 2026. The nominees for this edition will be announced on January 7.
