Woody Allen to Shoot 51st Film in Spain

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Woody Allen will make his fifty-first feature film with funding from the Spanish government. The 89-year-old director recently stated that he has yet to make his best film.

The Spanish government is providing €1.5 million to the Annie Hall director to produce a new film in Madrid. El País reported that the funding comes as part of a promotional campaign for the city, with the condition that Madrid is mentioned in the film.

Allen had planned to shoot a new film in Italy last summer, but the project was canceled due to financial issues. Later, Spanish media reported he would film in Barcelona, but that project was also shelved. This will be Allen’s third attempt in 2025 to produce a new film.

No details about the story or cast have been revealed, though it is possible Allen might work with Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz, who appeared in Vicky Cristina Barcelona, or other actors who have supported him in recent years.

Allen’s most recent film, Coup de Chance, premiered at the Venice Film Festival two years ago. Filmed entirely in France, it earned an 84% Rotten Tomatoes rating, making it one of Allen’s most acclaimed works in the past decade.

In a recent interview with Neil Rosen and Roger Friedman, Allen said he would like to make another film in New York but has faced a “serious problem” in securing funding.
