Christopher Nolan Elected President of Directors Guild of America

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Christopher Nolan has been elected president of the Directors Guild of America (DGA), taking over leadership of the union’s upcoming negotiations with Hollywood studios. The Oscar-winning director of Oppenheimer, widely regarded as one of the finest filmmakers of his generation, succeeds Lesli Linka Glatter, who held the position for two terms beginning in 2021.

Nolan stated: “Being chosen as president of the Directors Guild of America is one of the greatest honors of my career. Our industry is undergoing tremendous changes, and I am grateful to the members for entrusting me with this responsibility. I thank our former president for her leadership over the past four years. I look forward to working with her and our new board to provide even greater artistic and economic support for our members.”

In recent years, the DGA has focused on safety on film sets—including requiring on-site safety supervisors—and successfully lobbied for expanded California tax credits. Another key issue has been increasing residuals for projects distributed internationally on streaming platforms. The guild will begin a new round of talks with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) early next year.

Nolan won two Academy Awards for directing Oppenheimer. He revolutionized the superhero genre with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, and went on to direct blockbusters such as Inception, Dunkirk, and Tenet.

The British filmmaker recently completed production on The Odyssey, a star-studded epic set to be released by Universal next July, following the studio’s sweeping success with Oppenheimer.

At Saturday’s election, Laura Belsey was re-elected as National Vice President, and Paris Barclay retained his position as Treasurer.
