Adèle Haenel joins the “Global Flotilla of Resilience” heading to Gaza

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, French actress Adèle Haenel, star of Portrait of a Lady on Fire, announced that she will be departing from Tunisia along with the “Global Flotilla of Resilience” towards Gaza. The flotilla’s ships, carrying humanitarian aid, are set to sail in mid-September in the hope of breaking the blockade of Gaza. Humanitarian supplies in two similar attempts last June and July were blocked by Israel from reaching Gaza.

Haenel said: “In this dramatic moment in history, I have decided to board one of the ships and take part in the humanitarian mission of the ‘Global Flotilla of Resilience.’ Our goal is to deliver food and medicine to the people of Gaza who are suffering from famine imposed by the Israeli government.”

The 36-year-old actress, who arrived in Tunisia last week and will be traveling with more than a hundred others, added: “We are united to peacefully open a passage for humanitarian aid and to break the illegal blockade imposed on Gaza by Israel.”

Two years ago, Haenel announced her withdrawal from what she called the “reactionary and patriarchal” film industry, in protest against the support given to celebrities accused of sexual assault, including Roman Polanski and Gérard Depardieu.

Speaking about her new mission, she said: “We cannot stand by and watch the genocide in Gaza… I am afraid, because we are just simple ships facing an army that has already shown so much violence.”
