Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing earns $1.2 million on opening night

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Sony’s Caught Stealing, directed by Darren Aronofsky, grossed $1.2 million on its opening night. In the final days of summer, alongside Aronofsky’s latest film, The Roses starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Jaws (re-released for its 50th anniversary), and the remake of The Toxic Avenger starring Peter Dinklage and Elijah Wood, are also debuting in theaters. Meanwhile, Zach Cregger’s Weapons is heading into its fourth weekend with a projected $12 million total.

Caught Stealing tells the story of Hank Thompson, a former baseball player who becomes entangled in New York’s 1990s underworld of crime as he struggles to survive. The film is based on the novel by Charlie Huston, who also co-wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Aronofsky and Butler.

Starring Austin Butler, Matt Smith, and Zoë Kravitz, the film has been well-received by critics and currently holds a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Projections suggest that over its first four days, the film will surpass $10 million across more than 3,500 theaters.

The film’s opening-night gross is comparable to that of House of Gucci ($1.3 million) and War Dogs ($1.25 million) back in 2016.

Jaws, five decades after its original release, is aiming for a $5 million weekend across more than 3,000 theaters, including IMAX. On Thursday night, Steven Spielberg’s classic earned $950,000.

The Roses, which holds a 63% Rotten Tomatoes rating, made $800,000 on Wednesday and Thursday combined, and is expected to open to around $8 million from 2,700 theaters.
