“Rewriting History”: James Gunn Removes the Snyderverse with Peacemaker Season 2

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, James Gunn, head of DC Studios and producer/showrunner of Peacemaker, has altered the ending of the show’s first season. In a newly released Season 2 teaser, it is revealed that the events of Season 1 are now officially part of the new DCU continuity, with the Justice League from the DCEU/Snyderverse replaced by the Justice Gang.
The Justice Gang consists of Mister Terrific (played by Eddie Gathegi), Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), Superman (David Corenswet), and Supergirl (Milly Alcock). In the revised ending of Season 1, they appear instead of Henry Cavill’s Superman, Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, and Ezra Miller’s Flash.
In the original Season 1 finale, John Cena’s Peacemaker and his team killed a giant cow that served as the food source for alien invaders. The closing moments showed Peacemaker mocking the Justice League, telling them: “You’re late, you f***ing dickheads.” Just before that scene, Danielle Brooks’ Leota Adebayo called her mother Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to summon the team.
Season 2 introduces several retcons. The animated opening sequence has been replaced with the new Superman logo breaking chains, and the recap video now begins with “Previously in the DCU,” reframing Season 1—minus its original ending—as part of the new DCU narrative. This time, however, Adebayo summons the Justice Gang instead of the Justice League.
The encounter between the Justice Gang and Peacemaker closely mirrors the Justice League version, but with new dialogue. Hawkgirl remarks: “What an a**hole,” followed by Green Lantern adding: “Screw this guy. You know he tells people I puke all the time?”
Gunn has previously stated that Peacemaker Season 2 is “very important” for the future of DC, directly connecting to the events of the upcoming Superman film. He wrote all eight episodes of the new season and directed three. In an interview with Interview magazine, Gunn also revealed that in the new DCU timeline, the events of September 11 have not occurred.
Speaking to InsiderTV, Gunn admitted he didn’t have the budget to make more extensive changes to Season 1: “I’d love to do a George Lucas on it… but right now I don’t have the money.”
