Star-Studded ‘The Corrections’ Failed at HBO a Decade Ago — Now Meryl Streep Leads New Netflix Version

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, American Fiction director Cord Jefferson is set to helm a new limited series based on Jonathan Franzen’s 2001 novel, with Meryl Streep in the lead role.

Franzen’s The Corrections has long been considered a defining work of the 21st century—a National Book Award winner and a #1 New York Times bestseller. Naturally, Hollywood has sought to bring it to the screen for years, and over a decade ago, it nearly happened.

In 2012, Noah Baumbach directed a pilot for HBO alongside producer Scott Rudin, but the premium cable network ultimately passed on the project. That pilot featured an extraordinary cast, including Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans, and Greta Gerwig. While reports indicated the performances were stellar, sources at the time suggested HBO executives felt the book’s complex, multi-timeline narrative—which works masterfully in print—was too difficult to translate into a successful series. (At the time, HBO had recently canceled Luck and opted to pick up the star-studded True Detective instead.)

Now, more than ten years later, a new adaptation is officially moving forward. On April 2, 2026, it was announced that Meryl Streep will lead the series for Netflix.

Cord Jefferson, who recently won an Oscar for American Fiction and worked on the acclaimed Watchmen series, has signed on to direct every episode of the limited drama, which received a straight-to-series order. Franzen is adapting his own novel for the screen. Streep will executive produce alongside Jefferson and Task producers Mark Roybal and Paul Lee. Nicole Clemens also serves as an executive producer for the project, which is being produced by Paramount Television Studios.

The Corrections tells the story of a Midwestern family whose three adult children desperately—and often dysfunctionally—try to resist their mother’s wish for one last family Christmas. Each sibling is caught in their own delusional ambitions:

  • Enid (Streep) and Alfred are the parents at the center of the storm.
  • Gary, the eldest son, may be suffering from clinical depression.
  • Chip has lost his academic job and is floundering professionally.
  • Denise, the youngest, is potentially entangled in a secret affair.
  • Meanwhile, Alfred is struggling with the onset of dementia, and Enid is determined to make this final holiday a masterpiece of domestic harmony.

Streep’s involvement with the project reportedly dates back to 2024 when it was in early development at CBS Studios. She previously appeared in the Netflix film Don’t Look Up and has had major television roles in Big Little Lies and Only Murders in the Building.

Interestingly, while Noah Baumbach now has an overall deal with Netflix, he is not involved in this new iteration. However, another Franzen property is also making waves at the streamer: it was reported in February 2026 that Netflix is developing an adaptation of Franzen’s novel Crossroads, with Jeremy Strong (Succession) set to star as a Midwestern pastor.
