Release of the New Sonic the Hedgehog Film in 2028

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, during the end-of-year holiday season in 2028, Paramount Studios will release a feature film from the Sonic universe (Sonic the Hedgehog) on 22 December 2028, in addition to the untitled live-action/animation Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film that is set to hit theaters on 17 November 2028. Earlier reports had indicated that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 would be released in 2027.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opens one week before Thanksgiving weekend. Production on this project, produced by Neal H. Moritz, had previously been confirmed. The three Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films—two live-action titles and one animated feature—have grossed nearly $913 million worldwide, and by 2023 their retail value for Paramount had reached $1 billion.

Last year, Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 debuted at number one with a $60.1 million opening weekend. The film went on to surpass $236.1 million in North America and $492.1 million globally, bringing the total gross of the Sonic trilogy to $1.2 billion. The spin-off series Knuckles, meanwhile, premiered on Paramount+ and accumulated over 11 million hours viewed in its first 28 days.

Paramount also announced yesterday that Top Gun, directed by Tony Scott, will be re-released in May 2026 to mark its 40th anniversary. The film, starring Tom Cruise, grossed more than $180 million in the United States and $357 million worldwide. Its sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, reached $1.495 billion globally in 2022, becoming the highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career and the biggest box-office success in Paramount’s history.
