Sydney Sweeney reacts to the box-office failure of Christy

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Sydney Sweeney has responded to the commercial failure of her latest film Christy. The movie opened last weekend in 2,011 theaters and grossed only $1.3 million. Sweeney reacted to the disappointing box-office numbers on Instagram, saying that “art isn’t always made to sell.”
She wrote: “We don’t always create art for numbers and charts — we create it to make an impact. And Christy is the most impactful project of my life. Thank you, Christy. I love you.”
Sweeney continued: “I’m so proud of this film. I’m proud of the movie David [Michôd] made. I’m proud of the story we told. I’m proud to have represented such a powerful and resilient woman like Christy Martin. This experience has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”
The Emmy-nominated actress added: “This film is a symbol of survival, courage, and hope. During our promotional campaign, we helped raise awareness about domestic violence and supported survivors. Every one of us joined this film believing that Christy’s story could save lives. I’m grateful to everyone who watched, felt, believed — and will continue to believe — in the years to come. If Christy gives even one woman the courage to step toward safety, we’ve succeeded. So yes, I’m proud.”
Christy, produced on a $15 million budget and premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, marks Sweeney’s third consecutive box-office disappointment following Americana and Eden. The actress reportedly gained about 15 kilograms for the role and underwent intensive training. The film earned a B+ CinemaScore and a 67% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Recent controversy surrounding American Eagle ads — which many criticized as racially insensitive — has also been cited as one reason for the film’s poor performance.
Sweeney recently wrapped filming for Season 3 of Euphoria.
