According to the CinemaDrame news agency, Park Chan-wook—who is set to serve as the jury president at the Cannes Film Festival—will simultaneously present a major film project at the event’s market, a production that has already drawn significant attention due to its star-studded cast.
The South Korean filmmaker is assembling an all-star lineup for the western film The Brigands of Rattlecreek, which he considers a personal passion project. The film will feature Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey, Oscar nominee Austin Butler, multiple Emmy nominee Pedro Pascal, and Chinese cinema star Tang Wei.
The initial screenplay was written by S. Craig Zahler, and Park Chan-wook—known for films such as Oldboy and The Handmaiden—is developing it as his next directorial project. The film will be presented at the Cannes Market by Legendary 193 on behalf of producer Bradley Fischer, with Park also serving as a producer. The current version of the script has been completed with revisions by Park.
The story follows a sheriff and a doctor who seek revenge against a group of outlaws after they attack a small town during a violent storm, looting and terrorizing its residents. The narrative explores themes of revenge, the consequences of violence, justice, and the role of memory and family—recurring motifs in Park Chan-wook’s work, now set in the American Wild West.
Producers on the project include Bradley Fischer and Park Chan-wook through Moho Film, with Mike Medavoy and Georgia Kacandes serving as executive producers.
Park has reportedly been interested in developing this screenplay for more than a decade, with the project first emerging over twenty years ago. Over the years, companies such as Warner Bros. and Amazon have also shown interest. It is now considered one of the standout projects at the Cannes Film Market, with a budget exceeding $60 million and a rare combination of major stars and a distinctive auteur director.
Park Chan-wook, who recently appeared at Cannes with his acclaimed film Decision to Leave, has previously worked on English-language projects such as The Sympathizer series, The Little Drummer Girl, and the film Stoker.
With its high-profile cast and director, the project is regarded as one of the most significant titles at this year’s Cannes Market.
