Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother receives 5-minute ovation at Venice

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Jim Jarmusch’s Father Mother Sister Brother received a five-to-six-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival. The film, Jarmusch’s first competition entry at Venice since 2003, currently holds an 83% score on Metacritic and a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Father Mother Sister Brother tells three separate stories about relationships between adult children and their parents. The “Father” segment takes place in the northeastern United States, “Mother” is set in Ireland, and “Sister Brother” unfolds in Paris. The cast includes Adam Driver, Cate Blanchett, Tom Waits, Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luc Sabat.

Adam Driver was absent from the press conference and red carpet, though the other leading actors attended both events. In videos from the ovation, Jarmusch can be seen hugging and speaking with the cast and crew.

Just hours before the premiere, Jarmusch commented on his disappointment with MUBI’s involvement as an Israeli company: “I’m an independent filmmaker, and I’ve taken money from many different sources to finance my films. All corporate money is dirty. If you look closely at these film companies and their investment structures, you’ll find a lot of dirt. You can avoid it by not making films at all. But cinema is what communicates what I want to say. I’m concerned, but I don’t want the responsibility of explanation to fall on us artists. It’s not our role.”
