Christopher Nolan’s Epic ‘Odyssey’ Conquers Box Office with Explosive $17.6 Million in Previews

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, a year after ticket pre-sales first began, Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey has finally hit theaters, taking the box office by storm. The Greek epic, which marks Nolan’s follow-up to his Oscar-winning masterpiece Oppenheimer, raked in a stunning $17.6 million in Thursday previews. This figure marks the highest preview performance of the year, narrowly edging out the $17.5 million record previously held by Toy Story 5.
Odyssey is currently projected to gross between $90 million and $100 million over its opening weekend, which would secure Nolan his biggest debut since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises ($160 million). However, early tracking suggests these estimates might be highly conservative. Should the film hit the upper echelon of these projections, Odyssey will become the third film this year to cross the $100 million threshold in its opening weekend, following Toy Story 5 ($159 million) and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($131 million).
For comparison, Nolan’s previous blockbuster, Oppenheimer, brought in $10.5 million in previews during its historic “Barbenheimer” dual release. That film went on to secure an $82 million opening weekend, ultimately grossing $975 million worldwide, fueled by rave reviews and strong demand for premium formats like IMAX and 70mm prints. Odyssey is notably the first feature film shot entirely on IMAX cameras, triggering a massive ticket frenzy for premium screens. Fans are reportedly traveling across state lines or attending 2:00 AM screenings just to experience Odysseus’s perilous voyage to Ithaca.
With a massive $250 million production budget and an additional $125 million marketing campaign, Odyssey stands as one of the year’s most expensive releases, and the costliest R-rated film in cinema history. Consequently, it will require strong box office legs to achieve profitability. In this regard, stellar critical acclaim will serve as a major catalyst; the film currently boasts a spectacular 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
As is tradition with Nolan’s filmography, the movie features an ensemble of A-list Hollywood stars and frequent collaborators. Reunited with the director after Oppenheimer, Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, battling gods, monsters, and sorceresses on his journey home. The star-studded cast also includes Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, and Jon Bernthal.
