Lena Headey Slams Hollywood’s Impunity for Male Predators; Addresses ‘Game of Thrones’ Fan Backlash Over Body Double

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Lena Headey, the Emmy-nominated actress celebrated for her role in Game of Thrones, has opened up in a candid interview with The Telegraph. The actress detailed her harrowing experiences in Hollywood, confronting predators, and the intense scrutiny surrounding her on-screen nudity. Headey, who previously accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual harassment in 2017, once again took aim at Hollywood’s deeply flawed systemic structure.

“The bizarre protection that male predators receive in this industry because of disproportionate power—juxtaposed against vulnerable actresses who simply need to work and pay their bills—infuriates me,” Headey stated. “An entire project can be utterly ruined by just one person who, for whatever reason, is allowed to escape the consequences of their actions. It wasn’t until the #MeToo movement that we realized just how ubiquitous this issue was. Fortunately, most of the young women I speak with in the industry today are incredibly aware and stand their ground firmly against such demands.”

Reflecting on the early years of her career, Headey explained that there used to be an “unwritten tradition” forcing young actresses into sexualized and nude scenes—roles often euphemistically labeled as “ingenue parts.” She confessed that because she hadn’t attended drama school and lacked experience at the time, she didn’t have the courage to object and would often go home and cry after filming those scenes.

Game of Thrones was frequently criticized for its pervasive nudity. During its production, the role of an “intimacy coordinator” did not yet exist on sets, and young co-stars like Emilia Clarke later revealed they often wept after filming such sequences. However, Headey’s age and experience allowed her to better shield herself from those pressures.

Despite this, her decision to utilize a body double and CGI for Cersei Lannister’s infamous “Walk of Punishment” (Walk of Shame) scene in the show’s fifth season sparked a wave of anger and backlash from certain fans online.

Expressing her astonishment at the reaction, Headey remarked: “I was genuinely shocked by the sheer anger and the mindset that I had somehow cheated the audience. For me, acting requires intense emotional vulnerability. If I had done that scene completely naked in front of three thousand extras over the course of three days, my entire focus would have shifted to a defensive physical state, and I wouldn’t have been able to convey Cersei’s raw emotional weight. Some people thought that because I didn’t strip down, it made me lesser of an actress, when in reality, I just did what was emotionally right for the character.”
