List of Eligible Films for the 2026 Oscars in the Categories of Animated Feature, International Feature, and Documentary
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has released the list of eligible titles for the 2026 Oscars in three categories: Best Animated Feature, Best Documentary Feature, and Best International Feature, a few days after holding the Academy Governors Awards ceremony.
In the Best Animated Feature category of the 98th Oscars, 35 films will compete, although only five will ultimately receive nominations. The films submitted in this category may also compete for Best Picture, but in the last 14 years, no animated film has been nominated for Best Picture since Pixar’s “Toy Story 3.” Before that, “Beauty and the Beast” was nominated for Best Picture in 1991, even before the creation of the Best Animated Feature category.
In the Best Documentary Feature category, 24 films are eligible this year. However, similar to the animation category, some titles have not yet fully met the required screening rules and must be released before the deadline. Submitted documentaries may also compete in other categories, including Best Picture, but in the history of the Academy Awards, no documentary film has ever been nominated for Best Picture. The preliminary shortlists for Best Documentary Feature, Best Animated Short, and Best Live-Action Short will be announced on December 16.
In the Best International Feature Film category — previously known as Best Foreign Language Film — 68 countries are competing this year. Cause of Death: Unknown is Iran’s submission, but It Was Just an Accident, directed by Jafar Panahi, which represents France, is considered more likely to make the final shortlist. Eligible films must be at least 40 minutes long, contain over 50% non-English dialogue, and be produced outside of the United States. Other contenders include “Sentimental Value” starring Renate Reinsve and Elle Fanning, and “No Other Choice” by Park Chan-wook. The preliminary shortlist for this category will also be released on December 16.
Final nominations for the 98th Academy Awards will be announced on January 22, 2026, and the awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2026.
