Warner Bros. Greenlights Film Adaptation of Bestselling ‘Shatter Me’ Novels; Tahereh Mafi’s Literary Phenomenon Heads to the Big Screen
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Warner Bros. has acquired the film adaptation rights to the bestselling dystopian novel series Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi.
The movie deal coincides with the 15th anniversary of the publication of the first book in the series—a title that grew into a massive phenomenon across social media (particularly on TikTok’s literary community, BookTok), selling over 15 million copies worldwide and generating hundreds of thousands of posts under its dedicated hashtags.
The story of Shatter Me centers on a teenage girl named Juliette Ferrars, whose touch is lethal. In this dark world, she rises up to fight against a totalitarian and oppressive regime known as The Reestablishment. The synopsis reveals that the series chronicles Juliette’s journey toward discovering her abilities, finding her inner courage, and navigating a dystopian world filled with romance and rebellion.
Reflecting on the film deal, Tahereh Mafi stated: “I have been incredibly fortunate over the past fifteen years to have the backing of my devoted fans. Now, I am thrilled for this opportunity to bring the book’s world and its characters to life on screen in a way that honors the fans and their love for these books. Warner Bros. has been a fantastic partner so far, and I look forward to creating a lasting cinematic experience that takes this series to new heights.”
The feature project will be produced by an experienced team including Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen of Temple Hill, Karen Rosenfelt of Sunswept Entertainment, and Kevin McCormick of Langley Park Pictures. The project marks the first film announced under McCormick’s new producing deal with the studio. Additionally, Tahereh Mafi herself will serve as an executive producer on the movie.
The Shatter Me book series has been published in 38 countries and translated into 34 languages. Last year, Mafi released Watch Me, the first installment in a new series set within the Shatter Me universe titled The New Republic. The book, which takes place ten years after the fall of The Reestablishment, debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list and held the spot for several weeks. The second volume of this new series, Leave Me, was published this spring and became an instant bestseller, while the third volume, Run From Me, is scheduled to hit shelves this fall.
