The Reason Behind Halting the ‘Home Improvement’ Revival; Tim Allen Details the Ethical Issues of His On-Screen Sons
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Tim Allen, star of Toy Story 5, announced that a revival of the classic comedy series Home Improvement is currently impossible due to the personal and ethical struggles faced by the actors who played his sons in real life.
In an interview with US Weekly published on Wednesday, Tim Allen stated:
“They keep talking about how to move the project forward, but it has hit a dead end because the boys are currently dealing with a series of personal and ethical issues.”
The series Home Improvement, which aired for 8 seasons from 1991 to 1999, followed the life of Tim Taylor (played by Tim Allen), the host of a television home-improvement show. The plot revolved around his life, his wife Jill, and their three sons: Brad (played by Zachery Ty Bryan), Randy (played by Jonathan Taylor Thomas), and Mark (played by Taran Noah Smith).
Zachery Ty Bryan, who was 9 years old when the series began and 17 when it ended, has been arrested multiple times. His most recent arrest occurred in 2025 on charges of second-degree domestic violence. He was also detained in Oregon in February 2021 on charges of third-degree felony theft and felony assault. Prior to that, he was arrested in 2020 for allegedly strangling his then-fiancée.
In addition to Bryan’s numerous arrests, another major hurdle for reviving the series is Jonathan Taylor Thomas’s lack of interest in the acting profession. Patricia Richardson, who played the mother, confirmed on a podcast last year that Thomas no longer wishes to act. Thomas has not appeared in any project since his guest appearance on Tim Allen’s other sitcom, Last Man Standing, in 2015. Taran Noah Smith, who played the youngest son, effectively retired from acting in 1999 after voicing a character in the animated series Batman Beyond.
At the end of his conversation with US Weekly, Tim Allen added:
“They are caught up in their own issues and problems. I always thought it would be very interesting if the new story focused on their lives, but right now, to put it optimistically, doing so is an immense challenge.”
