The Madison Breaks Records in Home Entertainment; Cast Members Reveal the Secret Behind Taylor Sheridan’s Hit Series
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kurt Russell, and the star-studded cast of The Madison credit their powerful and deeply moving performances to the profound dialogue and writing magic of Taylor Sheridan. The drama series has intensely captivated audiences’ emotions right from its first season.
When Michelle Pfeiffer signed on to star in the series, she had not read a single page of the script, as creator Taylor Sheridan had not yet put anything on paper. Pfeiffer did not even know if Kurt Russell (who was set to play her husband) would make it to filming due to a scheduling conflict. She only knew a brief logline: a woman on the brink of collapse from the grief of losing her loved ones, fighting to rebuild her life.
Pfeiffer’s gamble paid off tremendously. Within its first 10 days of release, The Madison garnered a staggering 8 million viewers, becoming the most-watched premiere among all of Taylor Sheridan’s works. The series also recorded the highest viewership among women over 35 in Sheridan’s career portfolio. Taylor Sheridan serves as the creator and executive producer of the show, with Pfeiffer and Russell taking on dual roles as both actors and producers.
The series follows the wealthy Clyburn family from New York, who are forced to relocate to Montana following a fatal plane crash that kills the family patriarch, Preston (played by Kurt Russell), and his brother Paul (played by Matthew Fox). The 6-episode miniseries portrays the challenges faced by Stacey Clyburn (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) and her daughters, Abigail (played by Beau Garrett) and Paige (played by Elle Chapman), as they navigate this profound grief.
Since the series began airing last March, Pfeiffer and Russell have been astonished by the deeply emotional reactions from viewers, particularly men. Pfeiffer shared:
“What surprised me the most was the deep connection men made with this show. I think this series gave people a chance to break their silence and let their tears out—something that men, perhaps, do not usually allow themselves to do.”
Kurt Russell also praised the script, adding:
“Reading the scripts was difficult for me as well. If there are men out there who think like me, I must say they will spend half of the show’s runtime crying without shame, because this work forces you to feel emotions with your entire being.”
Matthew Fox and Christina Alexandra Voros (director and cinematographer of the first season) also lauded Taylor Sheridan’s writing, describing his imagery and dialogue as beautiful dramatic poetry that strikes directly at the heart of the audience.
The series utilizes flashbacks to show the dynamic of the relationship between Stacey and Preston, and the powerful chemistry between Pfeiffer and Russell makes the heavy burden of this mourning deeply believable for the viewer. In contrast, Stacey’s relationship with her daughters following the tragedy is highly complex and strained; one daughter is newly divorced and struggling with the challenges of being a single mother, while the other was an ambitious public relations manager in New York, now trapped in a completely foreign environment.
The stunning success of the project led to The Madison being officially renewed for a third season last April. This comes as the second season has already been filmed but has not yet been assigned a release date. The ensemble cast also includes Patrick J. Adams, Amiah Miller, and Will Arnett. The first season of the series is currently available for streaming on Paramount+.
