The Conclusion of the 2026 Annecy Festival: “The Violinist” and “Iron Boy” Seize the Top Prizes
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, the 50th edition of the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France—celebrated as the largest and most magnificent edition in the event’s history—has concluded with the announcement of the winners across its various categories. In a closing ceremony attended by prominent figures including Brad Bird, Travis Knight, Ricky Gervais, S. S. Rajamouli, and Peter Lord, the top honors were awarded to films from Singapore and France.
Singapore’s Historic Triumph: The Cristal Award for “The Violinist”
The Singaporean animated feature film The Violinist successfully captured the prestigious Cristal Award for Best Feature Film, the festival’s highest honor. This production marks the first Singaporean animated film in 15 years to secure a spot in Annecy’s official competition.
Directed by Ervin Han and supervised by veteran Disney animator Raul Garcia (known for his work on classics such as Aladdin and Fantasia 2000), the film follows a Spanish journalist who, while researching the origins of an old violin, uncovers the love story of two musicians. Their story begins in 1941 Singapore, just as the dreams of the two young artists, Kai and Fei, are shattered by the Japanese invasion of Malaya during World War II. The film is a co-production between Singapore, Spain, and Italy.
“Iron Boy” Sweeps Awards and “Decorado” Stands Out
This year’s Jury Prize was awarded to Iron Boy, an animated drama directed by Louis Clichy. The film’s North American, Latin American, Indian, and Southeast Asian television distribution rights had previously been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics at the Cannes Film Festival.
Set in the French countryside, the story centers on a young boy desperately trying to win the attention of his strict, farming father. However, after contracting a spinal illness, he is forced to wear a restrictive iron brace and must chart a new path for his life. In addition to the Jury Prize, Iron Boy also claimed the Audience Award and the Gan Foundation Award for Distribution.
Furthermore, renowned Spanish director Alberto Vázquez won the Paul Grimault Award for his animated feature Decorado, which tells the story of an unemployed mouse navigating an existential crisis and rebelling against a controlled urban environment.
Winners of the Contrechamp Competition
In the “Contrechamp” section, which is dedicated to more innovative and experimental works, the main prizes were distributed as follows:
- Contrechamp Grand Prize: Awarded to Blaise, directed by Dimitri Planchon and Jean-Paul Guigue. Based on a comic strip following the life of a teenager named Blaise, the film initially premiered in the ACID section at the Cannes Film Festival.
- Contrechamp Jury Prize: Presented to the Japanese animated film A New Dawn, directed by Yoshitoshi Shinomiya. Having made its world premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival, the film follows a boy named Kitaro who lives among solar panels in an abandoned factory, whose life is transformed when the building faces demolition.
