Stephen Colbert Named GQ’s “Man of the Year” 2025: Trump Did Not Cancel The Late Show

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Stephen Colbert has been named Man of the Year by GQ magazine. In his interview with the magazine, the comedian spoke about his years hosting The Late Show and addressed rumors surrounding the show’s cancellation.

Colbert revealed that he has been developing a project similar to The Colbert Report, but with a right-leaning political perspective:

“That old character is actually part of the new show and plays a central role, but he’s not the only character. Maybe one day I’ll make it, but that was the plan before the whole Letterman succession came up.”

GQ conducted the interview before Jimmy Kimmel Live! was suspended following Kimmel’s claim that Charlie Kirk’s assassination was orchestrated by Donald Trump’s supporters. Colbert’s own show was cancelled after he called Paramount’s $16 million settlement with Trump “a big bribe.”

Paramount, which needed approval from the Trump administration for its merger with Skydance, had decided to settle with the president—who had previously clashed with the network over 60 Minutes. The company insisted that The Late Show was cancelled for “financial reasons,” but speculation quickly arose about the real motive behind the decision.

Colbert told GQ:

“I can understand why people react that way, because CBS—or its parent company, I won’t say who made that call, since I don’t know and nobody’s telling us—decided to pay $16 million to the President of the United States over a lawsuit that their own lawyers at Paramount said was completely baseless. Obviously, that kind of move damages the credibility of the network, the company, and its news division. So it’s hard to see why anyone would do that unless it was to curry favor with one person.”

He added that speculating about it while still under contract with Paramount for another nine months “would be pointless”:

“It’s not my problem. People can have their own theories.”
