Scorsese Chooses 27th Film: What Happens at Night Starring DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Martin Scorsese has officially selected his 27th narrative feature as a director after months of consideration among several competing projects. Deadline reports that the film, titled What Happens at Night, will begin filming in early 2026 for Apple and StudioCanal.
Written by Peter Marber and adapted from Peter Cameron’s novel, the story follows an American couple who travel to a small snowy European town to adopt a child. Staying in a grand hotel, they encounter a series of mysterious figures—including a singer, a sinister businessman, and a faith healer. As they prepare to return home, they find their world, their lives, and their marriage unraveling. Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence are set to star.
Scorsese was initially attached only as a producer, but ultimately chose to direct, making this his first feature since Killers of the Flower Moon. The new project is said to evoke memories of Shutter Island. Scorsese wrapped filming on Killers nearly four years ago with DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, and Lily Gladstone, and was recently nominated for an Emmy for his work on The Studio. Although he had expressed interest in directing The Life of Jesus and Sinatra, both projects are currently shelved.
DiCaprio, recently cast in Michael Mann’s Heat 2, is earning rave reviews for Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another. Lawrence, meanwhile, premiered Die, My Love—produced by Scorsese—at Cannes, and recently collaborated with Robert Pattinson.
What Happens at Night begins production in 2026.
