“Purple Rain” Musical Heading to Broadway in 2027

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, the stage musical adaptation of “Purple Rain”, based on Prince’s 1984 landmark film and Grammy-winning album, is officially coming to Broadway in 2027. Producer Orin Wolf announced that previews will begin on March 12, 2027, at the Majestic Theatre in New York, with the official opening night set for April 12.

The musical features more than 20 of Prince’s classic hits, including iconic tracks like “When Doves Cry” and “I Would Die 4 U.” Prince, a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame legend who sold over 150 million records worldwide, passed away in 2016.

The “Purple Rain” stage production originally held its world premiere at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, Prince’s hometown. The book for the Broadway production is penned by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, with Tony Award nominee Saheem Ali (Buena Vista Social Club) directing. Prince’s longtime bandmates and collaborators Bobby Z and Morris Hayes serve as music consultants on the project. Casting for the Broadway run has not yet been announced.

Set in 1984 Minneapolis during the dawn of the music video era, the story follows “The Kid,” a charismatic young musician poised to propel his band to stardom. However, as his past threatens to dismantle everything he has built, he must navigate his way through the dark into the light.

The original Warner Bros. film, directed by Albert Magnoli, grossed over $70 million worldwide and won an Academy Award for Best Original Song Score. In 2019, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
