Netflix Cancels ‘The Boroughs’ After Just One Season; Duffer Brothers Collaborative Project Halted
According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, Netflix has decided to cancel the sci-fi series The Boroughs after just a single season, confirming the show will not be renewed for a second installment. The series, which had been frequently described as a senior-citizen version of Stranger Things, was executive produced by Matt and Ross Duffer (The Duffer Brothers).
The decision came as a surprise to many, especially since a writers’ room for Season 2 had already been established, and there were prior discussions regarding filming the second and third seasons back-to-back. However, despite receiving generally positive reviews, the show’s viewership numbers proved disappointing. The series garnered only 5.6 million views during its opening weekend and climbed to 9.5 million in its second week, before suffering a sharp decline in subsequent weeks. Furthermore, the show premiered right after the highly fast-paced and emotional series finale of Stranger Things on New Year’s Eve, suggesting that audience saturation with the Duffer Brothers’ supernatural themes may have contributed to the drop in viewership. High production costs, driven by heavy visual effects and an ensemble cast of high-profile actors, also directly influenced Netflix’s decision to cancel the project.
Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs was set in a quiet retirement community where a group of elderly heroes band together to stop a supernatural threat attempting to steal the one thing they have the least of: time. The series featured a distinguished cast, including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman. With the cancellation of this project alongside their other limited series, the animated spin-off Stranger Things: Tales of ’85 remains the only ongoing collaboration between the filmmaking duo and Netflix, as the Duffer Brothers recently signed a major overall deal with Paramount to develop future film and television projects.
