MTV Video Music Awards Winners: Ricky Martin Receives First “Latin Icon” Award at a Quiet Ceremony
According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, and Sabrina Carpenter each took home two “Moonman” awards on Sunday night at the MTV Video Music Awards. Gaga, in a ceremony even quieter than in recent years, won “Artist of the Year” after receiving 12 nominations, beating Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, and Beyoncé, none of whom attended.
Gaga dedicated the award to her husband, Michael Polansky, saying: “I don’t know how to express what this award means to me. I hope that as you navigate the chaos of daily life, you remind yourself of the importance of art, that you can rely on yourself and simple skills to stay whole.”
Later in the three-hour ceremony, Rossi won “Song of the Year” and in a long speech said: “This is such an important moment for my 16-year-old self and for anyone who dreams of equal recognition for their hard work.”
Sabrina Carpenter went on to win “Best Pop Artist” and “Album of the Year” for Short n’ Sweet, while Ariana Grande took home “Best Pop Video” and “Video of the Year.” Carpenter, in return for her wins, performed a song accompanied by members of RuPaul’s Drag Race and delivered a statement in support of transgender people.
Ricky Martin received the “Latin Icon” award for the first time and performed several of his hits including La Vida Loca and Maria. He said: “It’s very simple: this award belongs to all of you. I’m addicted to your applause—that’s why I keep coming back.”
In another segment of the ceremony, MTV honored Mariah Carey with the “Video Vanguard” award, presented by Ariana Grande. Carey joked: “I can’t believe this is my first VMA. I just have one question: what took you so long?”
