Michelle Dockery to Return to London Stage in New Play ‘Blood Sport: After Helen of Troy’
According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery is set to make her highly anticipated return to the London stage after a seven-year absence, starring in Ava Pickett’s new play Blood Sport: After Helen of Troy.
The announcement was made by London’s Stratford East theatre, where the new production is scheduled to celebrate its world premiere from September 3 to October 10, 2026. Joining Dockery is Gavin & Stacey star Laura Aikman, who will be making her professional stage debut. The production will be helmed by Lisa Spirling, marking her directorial debut as Stratford East’s newly appointed Artistic Director.
Synopsis
Years after abandoning her family, Helen returns home in the aftermath of a war fought entirely in her name. While her husband celebrates her return with joy, Helen’s childhood friend, Cy (played by Laura Aikman), feels quite the opposite. Over the course of a fragile night of peace, old wounds are reopened, loyalties disintegrate, and the true cost of one woman’s choice to walk away is painfully laid bare.
According to Stratford East, the play is a poignant exploration of friendship, motherhood, and the fallout of a woman whose face launched a war, now returning to finish it.

- Michelle Dockery (Helen): Best known for her iconic role as Lady Mary Crawley in Downton Abbey, Dockery last appeared on the London stage in the National Theatre’s production of Network, which earned her an Olivier Award nomination. Her other notable theatre credits include Burnt by the Sun, Pygmalion, and His Dark Materials.
- Laura Aikman (Cy): Soon to be seen in the upcoming season of BBC’s hit crime drama Line of Duty, Aikman’s extensive television and film credits include The Suspect: The Shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes and This City is Ours.
- Ava Pickett (Playwright): Pickett’s debut play, 1536, won the prestigious Susan Smith Blackburn Prize in 2024 and received an Olivier Award nomination in 2026. Her screenwriting credits include the acclaimed series The Great and Coachella Cowboys.
