Mediterranean Film Festival 2026 returns to Malta with expanded program

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, the fourth edition of the Mediterranean Film Festival will take place from June 21 to 28, expanding across the city of Valletta and several historic locations throughout Malta.

Organized by the Malta Film Commission, the festival has seen significant growth this year in both scale and quality. The 2026 program will feature a wider range of screenings, industry-focused events, and cultural initiatives designed to strengthen Malta’s position as an international filmmaking hub. This year’s edition will include five competitive sections instead of three:

Big Screen Competition
Mediterranean Competition
Mare Nostrum
Best of the World
Malta Focus

Each section will highlight different aspects of global and regional cinema.

Screenings will take place at the Embassy Cinema in Valletta, as well as open-air venues including the Upper Barrakka Gardens and Fort Ricasoli Counterguard. Selected screenings will also include Q&A sessions with filmmakers.

This year’s theme, “Beyond Together,” emphasizes the festival’s commitment to collaboration and cross-cultural exchange, reflecting Malta’s role as a bridge between creative industries and international talent.

The festival’s industry program will return with panels and masterclasses featuring prominent figures. Past editions have welcomed speakers such as Mike Leigh, Yorgos Mavropsaridis, Nathan Crowley, Rick Carter, Catherine Hardwicke, and Marjorie Simkin.

The festival will once again conclude with the Golden Bee Awards, featuring a wide range of honors across competitive categories, as well as special awards recognizing emerging and established talent. Jury members and full program details will be announced in May.

It is worth noting that the 2025 edition attracted over 11,400 visitors and received significant international media coverage. All proceeds from ticket sales in this year’s edition will be donated to Malta’s cancer charity, Puttinu Cares.
