Matthew McConaughey and Cole Hauser to Star in New Series from True Detective Creator for Netflix

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Netflix has won a competitive bidding war for the rights to a new series from Nic Pizzolatto, creator of True Detective. The series will reunite Pizzolatto with Matthew McConaughey and also star Cole Hauser, best known for Yellowstone. The project is being developed in collaboration with Skydance Sports.

Amazon and Apple were also interested in producing and streaming the series, but Netflix ultimately secured the deal and is now in the final stages of negotiations with McConaughey and Hauser. Pizzolatto publicly criticized season four of True Detective last year, which explains HBO’s absence from the competition.

McConaughey had previously been in talks to star in a Yellowstone spinoff, while Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan is currently developing The Dutton Ranch, another spinoff featuring Hauser and Kelly Reilly. McConaughey and Hauser also worked together years ago in Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused.

Details about Pizzolatto’s new series remain under wraps, but since McConaughey and Hauser are set to play brothers, it has become informally known as The Brothers Project. Given Skydance Sports’ involvement, the story is expected to have ties to the world of sports.

Meanwhile, McConaughey is also working on another series with Woody Harrelson for Apple TV+, and Pizzolatto’s film Easy’s Waltz, starring Al Pacino and Vince Vaughn, will premiere at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
