Johnny Depp Returns to Hollywood in Paramount’s Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Johnny Depp is returning to Hollywood with a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. Deadline reports that Paramount Pictures is developing Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol, directed by Ti West and starring Depp in the lead role. Andrea Riseborough is also set to star, with Nathaniel Halpern writing the screenplay and Emma Watts producing.
Over the decades, A Christmas Carol has seen numerous film and television adaptations. The story follows Ebenezer Scrooge, a bitter, miserly old man who undergoes a profound transformation after being visited by the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. West’s version reimagines the tale as a supernatural experience centered on a man in London who, like Dickens’s Scrooge, confronts his past, present, and future in a struggle for redemption.
Four months ago, reports emerged that Robert Eggers was also developing his own adaptation of A Christmas Carol, with Willem Dafoe eyed for the role of Scrooge. However, Eggers recently began filming Werwulf in the U.K., suggesting that Paramount’s project will move into production first.
Following his 2022 defamation trial victory against ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp has appeared in several smaller projects, but Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol marks his most significant Hollywood film since then. He recently wrapped production on Day Drinker, co-starring Penélope Cruz.
Director Ti West, best known for X, Pearl, and MaXXXine, will make his studio debut with this reimagining of Dickens’s classic.
Paramount Pictures is set to release Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol on November 13, 2026.
