Jennifer Lawrence: Martin Scorsese’s What Happens at Night to Begin Filming in Early 2026

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Martin Scorsese has chosen his next feature project following Killers of the Flower Moon, and according to Jennifer Lawrence, filming will begin in early 2026. The film is an adaptation of What Happens at Night, a novel by Francis Steegmuller, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
Scorsese has had several projects in development over the years that never reached production. While it’s possible that the 87-year-old filmmaker could still change course in the coming months, Lawrence — who will soon appear in Die My Love, directed by Lynne Ramsay — told IndieWire that filming for Scorsese’s new project is approaching.
She said:
“Hopefully early next year — maybe January or February. Of course, nothing’s certain until I actually find myself on set, but we’re supposed to start.”
Production on What Happens at Night might not begin at that time if DiCaprio receives an Oscar nomination for One Battle After Another, as he would be occupied with the awards season and its accompanying events.
The story follows an American couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a child. They stay at a grand hotel and encounter a cast of mysterious figures, including a singer, a sinister businessman, and a faith healer. As they prepare to return home, they find their world — and their marriage — beginning to unravel.
DiCaprio previously revealed on The Big Picture podcast that Scorsese asked him to rewatch Vertigo by Alfred Hitchcock. Scorsese’s filmography includes Cape Fear and Shutter Island, both of which share thematic similarities with Vertigo.
The novel What Happens at Night runs about 320 pages, and Scorsese’s adaptation could potentially become another three-hour epic, much like Killers of the Flower Moon, which was based on the nonfiction book by David Grann.
