James Tolkan, Actor from “Top Gun” and “Back to the Future,” Dies at 94

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, James Tolkan, an actor best known for his roles in Top Gun and the Back to the Future series, passed away on Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York, at the age of 94.
The news of Tolkan’s death was confirmed by a family spokesperson, as well as by Bob Gale (writer and producer) and the official Back to the Future website.
Tolkan’s career spanned more than five decades. His first television appearance was in the series Naked City in 1960, and his final role was in the 2015 film Bone Tomahawk. However, he is most widely recognized for portraying the school principal, Mr. Strickland, in the Back to the Future trilogy—a role he played in the original 1985 film, its 1989 sequel, and again in 1990 in the third installment as the grandfather of the same character.
He was also known for his role in Tony Scott’s Top Gun, portraying Commander Tom “Stinger” Jardian alongside actors such as Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Meg Ryan.
Other notable films in his career include WarGames, The Amityville Horror, Armed and Dangerous, among many others. He also appeared in numerous television series, including The Wonder Years.
Tolkan was born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan. After serving in the United States Navy, he attended Coe College and the University of Iowa before moving to New York to study at The Actors Studio under instructors such as Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.
He is survived by his wife, Parmely, whom he met in 1971 during an Off-Broadway production of Pinkville.
In a statement on the Back to the Future website, fans were encouraged to make donations to local animal shelters or animal welfare organizations in their communities in honor of Tolkan.
