James Gunn: Superman and Lex Luthor Unite in Superman: Man of Tomorrow

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, DC Studios head James Gunn has confirmed that Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, will join forces in Superman: Man of Tomorrow to face a greater threat.
In a new interview with Howard Stern, a longtime fan of the superhero genre, Gunn confirmed this unlikely alliance in the upcoming Superman sequel. When Stern pulled up a DC fan page speculating that the villain Brainiac would make his first appearance in Man of Tomorrow, Gunn responded: “The story is about Lex Luthor and Superman collaborating—at least to some extent—to confront a much, much bigger threat.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Gunn praised the casting of Supergirl. Milly Alcock, who appeared in the closing scenes of Superman, will reprise her role in the standalone film Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
“Milly Alcock may be the best casting choice of my entire life,” Gunn said. “I think she’s phenomenal in that film.”
In the 1990s, Tim Burton attempted to make a Superman film starring Nicolas Cage, with Brainiac as the main villain, though the project never came to fruition. Gunn previously revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Brainiac had been considered at one stage for the first Superman film. Another possible addition to the sequel is Lobo, played by Jason Momoa, who is expected to appear first in Supergirl. Before Man of Tomorrow arrives in 2027, Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, will be released in 2026.
Meanwhile, DC and Warner Bros. have recently launched production on Clayface, directed by James Watkins and written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie.
Superman: Man of Tomorrow will be released on July 9, 2027.
