Jake Gyllenhaal and Kevin Costner join Honeymoon with Harry

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Amazon MGM has acquired distribution rights to the comedy-drama Honeymoon with Harry, starring Kevin Costner and Jake Gyllenhaal—a project that has been in development for two decades.
Glenn Ficarra and John Requa have been tapped to direct, with Dan Fogelman writing the screenplay. The trio previously collaborated on the acclaimed film Crazy, Stupid, Love and Hulu’s Paradise.
The project, based on an unpublished novel by Bart Baker, has been in the works since 2004. The story follows a man (Gyllenhaal) whose fiancée dies just two days before their wedding. In his grief, he decides to go on the honeymoon trip accompanied by her father (Costner).
Fogelman will produce alongside Mike Karz of Gulfstream Pictures and former Amazon MGM chief Jennifer Salke through her new company, Sullivan Street Productions. Honeymoon with Harry marks Salke’s first project as a producer.
The film has had a long journey through Hollywood. Karz first set it up at New Line 21 years ago, with Oscar-winning Crash director Paul Haggis writing a version of the script and planning to direct Vince Vaughn and Jack Nicholson. At another point, Jonathan Demme was attached to direct a version scripted by Jenny Lumet (Rachel Getting Married, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds).
Fogelman joined the project in 2015 when New Line considered Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro for the leads, and in 2017 Nick Cassavetes was briefly attached to direct. Karz ultimately held onto Fogelman’s script until Amazon MGM picked it up. Gulfstream has previously partnered with the studio on romantic comedy Upgraded starring Camila Mendes, and action drama One Fast Move with K.J. Apa and Eric Dane.
Gyllenhaal recently starred in Prime Video’s record-breaking Road House remake, with a sequel set to shoot this fall. He also led Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, earning an Emmy nomination for Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie.
Costner, an Oscar winner for Dances with Wolves, has in recent years starred in Paramount’s hit series Yellowstone and directed the multi-part western epic Horizon: An American Saga.
