Gotham Awards Nominations: Jafar Panahi Nominated for Best Director / One Battle After Another Leads with Six Nods

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, the big-budget film One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, leads the nominations for the Gotham Awards. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, the film earned six nominations, including Best Feature, Best Performance for Benicio del Toro and Teyana Taylor, and Breakthrough Performer for Chase Infinity, making it this year’s top contender.

Two years ago, Gotham organizers lifted the budget cap for eligible films. Previously, only productions with budgets under $35 million qualified for consideration. In those years, acclaimed titles such as Spotlight (2015), Moonlight (2016), and Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022) went on to win Best Feature and later triumphed at the Oscars. The removal of the budget restriction in 2024 had little impact, with only Ryan Gosling’s Barbie representing big-budget projects. This year, however, the dominance of the $130 million One Battle After Another is clear.

Other nominees for Best Feature include Bugonia, East of Wall, Familiar Touch, Hamnet, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You, Lurker, Sorry, Baby, The Testament of Ann Lee, and Train Dreams.

Jafar Panahi’s It Was Just an Accident, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes and represents France in the Oscar race, is nominated for Best Director and Best International Feature.

For the fourth consecutive year, the acting categories will remain gender-neutral, with performers like Jessie Buckley (Hamnet) competing against Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon).

Norway’s Oscar entry Sentimental Value missed nominations for Best Feature and Best Lead Performance, though Enya Ibsdottir Liljas and Stellan Skarsgård earned nods for Best Supporting Performance.

The 2025 Gotham Awards ceremony will take place on December 1, 2025, in New York City.
