Gene Hackman’s Golden Globes and Mirror Collection to Be Auctioned

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, screenplays, Golden Globe awards, and other artistic items from Gene Hackman’s personal collection are going up for sale. The actor, best known for Once Upon a Time in America and Hoosiers, passed away last February at the age of 95.

The first auction, focused on Hackman’s art collection, will take place on November 19 in New York. Andrew Huber, Head of 20th and 21st Century Art at Bonhams, described Hackman as “one of the greatest actors of our time,” noting that he collected mirrors “with precision and aesthetic sensitivity.” He added, “This collection was built with great care and tremendous passion.”
Bonhams will hold two online auctions — from November 8 to 21 and November 25 to December 4 — featuring Hackman’s personal artworks, annotated books, screenplays, posters, and props from his film sets. Among the items for sale are Hackman’s three Golden Globe Awards: for Unforgiven (1993), The Royal Tenenbaums (2002), and his Lifetime Achievement Award (2003).
Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, along with their dog, tragically passed away in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Their deaths were initially reported as “suspicious,” but an autopsy later confirmed that Hackman had suffered a fatal heart attack while in an advanced stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Arakawa had died earlier from a rare viral illness.
