First Trailer for Christy Starring Sydney Sweeney

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, the first trailer for David Michôd’s Christy has been released just a week after its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Sydney Sweeney stars as a boxer in the 1990s who earned the nickname “the female Rocky.”

The film chronicles how Christy Martin met Jim Martin in 1989, later marrying him, and went on to become the first woman to sign with legendary promoter Don King. She also became the only female boxer to appear on the cover of Sports Illustrated. While she rose to fame and popularity, behind the scenes she struggled with a toxic relationship.

Sweeney told W Magazine that for the role she had to gain more than 30 pounds: “I just started eating. I’d do an hour of weight training in the morning, two hours of kickboxing midday, and then another hour of weight training at night.”

Last year, Sweeney shared on social media that she had trained intensively for months to bring the story of this “extraordinary woman” to life: “She was a true champion who fought both inside and outside the ring.”

Following its Toronto screening, Christy received a 65% score on Metacritic. The Guardian gave the film two out of five stars, writing: “Christy Martin’s life is full of devastating setbacks, but in this biopic, we rarely feel their impact.”

Christy will be released on November 7.
