Early Predictions for the 2026 Venice Film Festival: Fierce Competition for the Golden Lion Among New Works by Aaron Sorkin, Denzel Washington, and Florian Zeller

According to the CinemaDrame News Agency, with just over a month remaining until the official lineup announcement for the Venice International Film Festival, speculation is intensifying over which star-studded, high-profile features will compete for the prestigious Golden Lion.

This year, Venice’s Artistic Director, Alberto Barbera, is racing against time to finalize the program for the festival’s 83rd edition. However, one trend already seems clear: Venice 2026—much like this year’s Cannes Film Festival—is expected to see a scaled-back presence from major Hollywood studios. A growing reluctance by studios to incur heavy promotional expenses at festivals, combined with production delays across several anticipated U.S. projects and the lingering aftereffects of Joker: Folie à Deux‘s critical reception last year, has led to a drop in major commercial titles. For instance, David Fincher’s The Adventures of Cliff Booth (a spin-off to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood starring Brad Pitt) and Tom Ford’s Cry to Heaven (featuring the cinematic debut of Adele) have both missed their window for the Lido due to post-production timelines.

Nevertheless, Hollywood still stands a strong chance of making a major splash. One of the most anticipated contenders circling the lineup is Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning, a standalone follow-up to his masterpiece The Social Network. In this installment, Jeremy Strong steps into the role of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, replacing Jesse Eisenberg. Reports suggest that discussions are underway between Alberto Barbera and Sony Pictures to secure a world premiere on the Lido.

Netflix is also poised to arrive well-equipped. The streaming giant’s biggest asset is Here Comes the Flood, a high-stakes heist thriller directed by Fernando Meirelles and featuring an ensemble cast led by Denzel Washington, Robert Pattinson, and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Additionally, Apple TV+ is rumored to showcase the second season of Seth Rogen’s comedy series The Studio in an Out of Competition slot, following recent location shooting in Venice featuring a cameo by Madonna.

Amid these predictions, acclaimed American actor and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal has been set as the Jury President for the main competition, tasked with leading the panel that will choose the winner of the Golden Lion. 2. The Bunker – Director: Florian Zeller

Florian Zeller, who achieved international acclaim with his Oscar-winning drama The Father, returns with a psychological thriller. Real-life couple Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz star as a husband and wife whose lives are upended when a tech billionaire constructs a mysterious underground bunker beneath their property. 4. Wild Mustang Number Nine – Director: Martin McDonagh

The latest controversial installment in the massive, multi-year DAU cinematic project. Khrzhanovsky reportedly spent over two and a half years editing and finalizing this iteration. The director remains an outspoken critic of Putin and has formally renounced his Russian citizenship.

10. It Will Happen Tonight – Director: Nanni Moretti

This family drama is a loose adaptation of the short story collection The Hungry Heart by an Israeli author, starring Louis Garrel and Jasmine Trinca. This marks the first time in over two decades that the celebrated Italian auteur will unveil his latest work on the Lido instead of staging a world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

The 83rd Venice International Film Festival will take place on the Lido from September 2 to September 12, 2026. The official lineup for the festival is scheduled to be unveiled on July 23.
