Denzel Washington: I’m Tired of Watching Movies

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Denzel Washington revealed in an interview with GQ, alongside director Spike Lee and his co-star A$AP Rocky in Highest 2 Lowest, that he no longer has the desire to watch films. The Oscar-winning actor admitted that perhaps the reason is having made more than 40 films since the 1980s.

The star of Training Day and Man on Fire said: “I don’t watch movies, man. I really don’t. I’m telling you the truth! I don’t watch movies! I don’t go to the cinema. I don’t watch films… I’m tired of movies. Yes.”

When Lee asked how many films he has acted in so far, Washington replied: “Too many. I think 50!”

Highest 2 Lowest marks the fifth collaboration between Lee and Washington and is an adaptation of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 film High and Low. Jeffrey Wright, Ice Spice, Dean Winters, and A$AP Rocky are among the other cast members of Lee’s film. Washington plays a music mogul who faces a moral dilemma in a blackmail conspiracy.

Washington had previously stated that he does not value the Academy Awards: “I don’t act for the Oscars. I don’t care about things like that. I’ve been acting for a long time, and there were times I won when I shouldn’t have, and times I didn’t win when I should have. Man gives awards. God gives rewards. I’m not interested in the Oscars… I’m not bragging! I’m just saying how I feel. On the last day of my life, [the Oscar] won’t do me any good.”

In 1992, Washington was nominated for an Oscar for Lee’s Malcolm X, but the award went to Al Pacino. At the last Cannes Film Festival, Lee stated that Washington had deserved the Oscar for Malcolm X: “What he did in that movie was amazing. I don’t want to disrespect my brother Al Pacino, I love him. But in my opinion, Denzel should have won.”

Highest 2 Lowest will premiere on Apple TV+ on September 5.
